Felix Afena-Gyan makes long-awaited Black Stars return in Unity Cup victory over Trinidad
Ghanaian forward Felix Afena-Gyan made his much-anticipated return to the Black Stars on Saturday, playing in Ghana’s impressive 4-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago during the third-place match of the 2025 Unity Cup at the G-Tech Stadium in Brentford, West London.
Afena-Gyan, who last represented Ghana 981 days ago in a friendly against Brazil in September 2022, came on as a second-half substitute, marking his return to international football.
This moment signifies a new chapter in the 21-year-old’s career following his absence from the national team setup. He was introduced in the second half with Ghana already leading 3-0, thanks to goals from Jordan Ayew, Razak Simpson, and Mohammed Fuseini in the first half.
Midfielder Lawrence Agyekum added a fourth goal in the 59th minute, capitalizing on a goalkeeping error to round off a strong team performance.
Although Afena-Gyan did not score, he demonstrated his attacking prowess by linking up well with teammates and putting pressure on the Trinidad and Tobago defense.
The return of Afena-Gyan, who currently plays for Juventus Nex Gen is a promising development for Ghana as head coach Otto Addo works to blend youth and experience ahead of future qualifiers and competitions.
The Black Stars’ victory secured them a third-place finish in the Unity Cup, offering fans a glimpse of the team’s growing depth and potential.
