Females must develop tough skins to be DJs —Ohemaa Woyeje

Ghanaian Disc Jockey (DJ) Ohemaa Woyeje has opined that most female DJs in the country cannot successfully advance to the next level because they lack the confidence needed to promote their craft and tough skin for criticism.

She asserted that while just a handful of female DJs in Ghana were succeeding and gaining recognition locally and abroad, the rest were yet to show a strong sense of interest and confidence to carve a niche that would allow them to gain traction in an industry that had long been perceived as the preserve of men.

In an interview, the sensational DJ and radio host said while society was slowly coming around to accepting female DJs, it was important for women to solidify their position and craft with hard work and confidence to give them the opportunity to get the necessary traction.

“There are people who attack your personality as a female DJ. If you are not confident, you will be discouraged, but what you should do as a female DJ to keep going in this industry is to master your craft, develop a thick skin for all the criticisms, strive for excellence and watch society applaud your efforts.

“Initially it was difficult for people to accept female DJs because they felt it was the preserve of men, but now they are beginning to accept the reality that women can and what we can do is to go all out in confidence, stay put and not allow ourselves to be discouraged,” she noted.
