A devastating fire broke out in the early hours of Saturday, September 13, destroying heavy-duty equipment owned by craft manufacturers and artisans at the Accra Timber Market near the Aayalolo school, within the Accra Metropolitan Assembly.
The fire, which tore through the area before dawn, left behind charred remains of machines and tools worth millions of Ghanaian Cedis.
Eyewitnesses said the flames spread rapidly, giving little time for intervention. Emergency responders from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) arrived at the scene shortly after receiving distress calls.
According to the Chief Fire Officer of GNFS, preliminary investigations suggest the fire was caused by human negligence.
One individual has been arrested in connection with the incident and is currently assisting the police with further investigations.
Many local artisans have been left without the tools they rely on to earn a living.
Some expressed fear over how long it would take to recover from the loss, especially with no immediate support in sight.
