Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) successfully contained a fire that erupted at the Korle Bu Medical School’s medical laboratory buildings late on Tuesday night, June 17, 2025.
According to the GNFS Public Relations Office for the Greater Accra Region, an emergency call was received at exactly 23:50 GMT regarding the fire at the school’s laboratory complex.
The blaze impacted several areas, including the Accounts Office, Stores, Administration, and Archives within the Medical Laboratory building.
A coordinated response was initiated quickly, involving personnel and equipment from various locations, including the Regional Headquarters Substation, Accra City Fire Station, National Headquarters Substation, and the Ministries Fire Station.
Firefighters brought the situation under control by 00:43 hours and completed the extinguishing process by 04:10 hours this morning, Wednesday, June 18, 2025.

The GNFS confirmed that there were no injuries, crediting the successful operation to the skill and dedication of the responding crews.
Thanks to the rapid response, nearby buildings such as the Allied Sciences Building, the Diabetic Centre, and the Stores Annexe were protected from damage.
“The cause of the fire remains under investigation,” the statement said.
Additionally, the GNFS emphasised that measures were implemented right after the fire was extinguished to prevent any potential reignition.
The occurrence raised public concern, given the fire’s location at one of Ghana’s key health institutions.
Investigators are now expected to evaluate the damage incurred to important documents and equipment within the affected laboratory sections.
