Florentino Perez re-elected as Real Madrid president for fifth consecutive term
Florentino Perez has been officially re-elected as president of Real Madrid until 2025 for a fifth consecutive term and sixth overall.
The 74-year-old ran unopposed in the election which was called by the club last week and was confirmed as the winner on Tuesday.
It’s the third time in a row that Perez has been re-elected without a vote after he also faced no challengers in 2013 and 2017.
A statement on the club’s website read: “This Electoral Board, having seen only one candidacy presented and by virtue of article 40, section E, point 2 of the club’s current bylaws, proclaims Don Florentino Perez Rodriguez as president of Real Madrid.”
Perez, 74, has been president of the La Liga giants for a total of 18 years over two spells, from 2000 until 2006 and then since 2009 after taking over from Ramon Calderon.
Under Perez, Madrid clinched the Decima – their 10th Champions League crown – in 2014.

There are strict eligibility requirements, tightened in a members’ vote in 2012, which limit the field of potential runners.
A candidate must have been a Real Madrid member or socio for at least 20 years and must have sufficient personal wealth to be able to obtain a bank guarantee worth at least 15% of the club’s budget.
Perez first won the Real Madrid presidency in 2000 and had a transformative impact on the club, as well as Spanish and European football as a whole.
His first six-year spell in charge remembered as the “Galactico” era, saw the club sign Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo Nazario, and David Beckham and win two La Liga titles, as well as the Champions League in 2002.
The project then unravelled as Madrid went three seasons without a trophy for the first time in 50 years, causing Perez to resign in 2006 as he was followed by lawyer Ramon Calderon.
Calderon’s reign also ended in his resignation, three years later, and Perez was able to sweep to victory in elections in 2009.
During his second mandate, the club has won La Liga three times — in 2012, 2017, and 2020 — as well as four Champions Leagues, including three-in-a-row under coach Zinedine Zidane from 2016 to 2018.
Madrid are under significant financial strain, with the COVID-19 pandemic coinciding with a costly redevelopment of the new Bernabeu stadium, due for completion in 2022.
