Four children wounded in bomb explosion at La

Four children are battling life-threatening wounds following a bomb explosion at La in Accra.

The children aged between five and twelve while playing last Tuesday in the neighbourhood chanced upon the grenade thinking it was a cocoa fruit.

The children picked up the live grenade which later detonated leaving them with severe injuries.

Father of the four, Oko Adams told Joy News “some people rear pigs around the area so the children go there to play. While playing, they saw the bomb and said they thought it was a toy or cocoa”.

According to the father, his children took turns in tossing the bomb around in excitement. After a while, the bomb exploded injuring his children in the process.

“Last week Tuesday, I was working when I heard a loud sound, Boom! I panicked and wondered if a coup d’etat was happening in Ghana. Everyone came out of their homes to the street to find out what exactly was happening.

“After about 15 minutes, a salon car pulled up with my children in there. One could not even move. Another had his shorts soaked in blood. The driver helped me rush them to Kofi Annan where they removed some of the bomb pellets which had entered the flesh of the children, especially the first one, Tetteh,” he narrated.

Mr. Adams said they were later transferred to the Korle bu Teaching Hospital where the condition of the children was listed as critical.

He added that Korle bu then transferred them to the Police Hospital for further treatment.

Fortunately for Mr. Adams, all his four children survived. But he has been left with a daily dilemma of how to feed and cater for their future medical bills.

The father who works as a laborer said his family was left with no money to feed since he had spent all he had to ensure all four children survived the bomb explosion.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has issued an alert to parents and guardians against leaving children to play around without proper supervision.

A statement issued by the police said “children should be discouraged from handling unfamiliar objects”.

So unfortunate and I pray the security agencies give further and particulars on the grenades. Why were they planted in an area people without knowledge about it had access to.
