Four-year-old, others perish in gory accident on Accra-Kumasi Highway

Three persons, including a four-year-old child, have died in a fatal accident on the Accra-Kumasi Highway.

The accident involved a VVIP bus with registration number GL 527-14 at Amanase near the Suhum stretch of the highway.

The bus was carrying about 43 passengers.

According to a staff of the National Disaster Management Organisation, the steering wheel of the bus locked, leading to the crash.

“The accident occurred around 5:30am between Amanase and Okorase near Suhum stretch of the Accra to Kumasi Highway. They were about 43 passengers in the bus from Kumasi to Accra, but the steering wheel locked, so the driver attempted to apply break leading to the bus to veer off the road and crashed at the roadside,” Kwadwo Minta told Accra-based Starr FM.

He added that “Myself and my District Director of Ayensuano NADMO, Joseph Okai Gyan, rushed to the scene to help rescue the victims; unfortunately, three persons, including a four-year-old child, died instantly. Many are seriously injured and have been rushed to Suhum Government Hospital.

In August this year, four persons died on the Kumasi-Techiman road in the Ashanti region after a Yutong bus collided head-on with a Mitsibushi Pajero vehicle.

The fatalities included a Spanish citizen.

The impact caused the bus to burst in flames, killing one person on the spot.

Two were pronounced dead on arrival by medics at the Nkensu Government Hospital in the Offinso North District of the Ashanti region.

Another person who sustained severe injuries passed on while being sent to the Wenchi government Hospital.

Kumasi-Techiman road is a known accident-prone stretch.

On  October 4, 2019, a bullion van belonging to the Bank of Ghana crashed head-on with a petrol tanker at the Kumasi-Techiman on a Friday afternoon which led to the death of three persons with two other persons seriously injured.

Another accident occurred on  June 4, 2011. Eight people died on the spot in a fatal accident involving a 207 Benz bus and a cargo truck with other two persons left seriously injured on the Kumasi –Techiman road.

Adding to increasing concerns about fatalities on the road, NADMO has called on the government to give the road some engineering upgrades.
