Fuel prices go up as new GH₵1 fuel levy takes effect
Some Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have begun increasing prices of petroleum products at the pump, following the implementation of the new GH₵1 fuel levy today, July 16, 2025.
GOIL, a major player in the market, has raised petrol prices from GH₵12.07 to GH₵12.88 per litre, while diesel now sells at GH₵14.38, up from GH₵13.20.
Star Oil, the market leader, is now selling petrol at GH₵12.59, with some outlets offering it at a slightly lower price of GH₵11.99. Diesel prices have also gone up to GH₵13.99, with select stations offering it at GH₵13.79.
Several other OMCs have indicated that they will adjust their prices later today in the second pricing window of July.
Most companies cite the new GH₵1 fuel levy, now added to both petrol and diesel as the main reason for the price hike.
According to Dr. Riverson Oppong, CEO of the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies, prices could have dropped by around 2% if not for the levy taking effect today.
Meanwhile, the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) is calling on the government to reconsider the taxes in the fuel price build-up.
Executive Secretary Duncan Amoah says a review could bring much-needed relief to consumers, even as the new levy remains in place.
