President John Dramani Mahama has delivered his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) since returning to office for a second term, marking a significant moment in his political journey.

Speaking in parliament, he reflected on his return after nearly a decade, acknowledging the unpredictability of life and expressing gratitude to Ghanaians for the historic mandate they granted him.

With an overwhelming majority in parliament, Mr. Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to revitalizing the economy and addressing the hardships facing citizens. He pledged to implement bold measures aimed at resetting the nation’s economic trajectory and alleviating financial burdens on Ghanaians.

The president commended parliament for the swift vetting and approval of his ministerial nominees, describing the process as an unprecedented display of efficiency in Ghana’s Fourth Republic.

He urged lawmakers to extend the same urgency to confirming his deputy ministerial nominees, emphasizing the need for them to begin work immediately to execute government policies.

As part of his administration’s cost-cutting measures, Mr. Mahama announced a significant reduction in government expenditure.

He revealed that the number of ministers and deputy ministers would be trimmed to just 60, including regional ministers, in a bid to promote efficiency.

Additionally, he pledged to downsize the presidential staff to ensure a lean and cost-effective government.
