The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has rejected claims of safety and operational failures at Kotoka International Airport, calling them completely untrue and misleading.
In a statement released on Friday, May 23, GACL responded to a report published by the Herald newspaper, which alleged severe deficiencies in airport operations.
According to GACL, these allegations paint a false picture of Ghana’s flagship airport, which remains fully compliant with international aviation safety standards.
The airport, which handles over 3 million passengers a year, recently passed a key audit by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) with a 92 percent compliance score.
It also retains a Category 1 safety rating from the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and is listed in the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) 2024 Global Operational Safety Audit whitelist.
“Our staff are fully equipped with the right tools and protective gear to carry out their duties safely.
“There are enough marshalling wands, operational vehicles, and communication devices in use. The claims are not just inaccurate, they are damaging,” a GACL spokesperson said.
The statement also dismissed allegations of broken Motorola radios, lack of access to restricted areas, and staff unrest.
It said access protocols follow global standards and that employees involved in spreading false information will face disciplinary action.
GACL reaffirmed its dedication to safe and secure airport operations and warned media outlets against spreading unverified information.
The airport has seen no major safety incident in over two years, and GACL says it is committed to maintaining that record.
