Frederick Acheampong, a member of the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has stated that the organization does not need to seek external approval when making appointments to the national football teams.

Acheampong’s comments followed the GFA’s recent changes to the technical team of the Black Stars after the team failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Winfried Schäfer, a German coach, has been appointed as the technical advisor for the Black Stars and will also serve as the GFA’s technical director. Additionally, Desmond Offei, the current head coach of the Black Satellites, has been promoted to assistant coach of the Black Stars, succeeding German coach Joseph Laumann.

Offei will join existing assistants John Paintsil and Fatawu Dauda, who will retain their roles under head coach Otto Addo. Kris Perquy will take on the position of team psychologist, while Gregory De Grauwe will become the video analyst, among other new technical staff members.

In the face of criticism, Acheampong defended the GFA’s decisions in an interview, stating that the association does not need to consult anyone before making such appointments.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) don’t need to consult anyone to decide on the Black Stars, he told Asempa FM.

We are the runners of the various national teams and we don’t need to consult anyone in decision, he added.

Otto Addo, who has been under significant pressure, will continue to lead the newly formed technical team as head coach.

Meanwhile, Kofi Adams, the Minister of Sports and Recreation, has indicated that the new technical setup will be reviewed.
