Ghana Premier League grinds to a halt after fatal Nsoatre clash

Source The Ghana Report

The upcoming round of games in the 2024-2025 Ghana Premier League (GPL) season has been officially postponed.

This decision follows the tragic events after the clash between Nsoatreman FC and Kumasi Asante Kotoko over the past weekend in Nsoatre.

A well-known Kotoko fan, Francis Yaw Frimpong, commonly referred to as Pooley, was fatally stabbed during a post-game altercation.

Additionally, three Kotoko players, including captain Justice Blay, received red cards for their involvement in a significant on-field brawl that triggered the clashes among the supporters.

As a result, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has cancelled the Week 20 games while investigations continue into the disturbances stemming from the game, which saw Kotoko record a 1-0 defeat.

This means that Hearts of Oak’s match against Bechem United, Kotoko’s game against Young Apostles, and Nsoatreman’s fixture against Berekum Chelsea, all scheduled for February 9, will not take place as planned.

In response to these events, the GFA has called an emergency meeting with leaders of GPL supporters’ groups on Friday, February 7, to discuss the role of fans in preventing such violent incidents in the future.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association, Asante Kotoko, and Nsoatreman FC have denounced the violent incidents at Nana Kronamansah Park.
