Ghana to evacuate citizens from Iran amid escalating Israel-Iran conflict

The Government has announced an immediate evacuation of its citizens from Iran in response to the rapidly intensifying conflict between Israel and Iran.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced on Monday, 16 June, via social media, emphasising that the decision is driven by the urgent need to safeguard Ghanaian lives.

“In light of the escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran, the Mahama Administration has taken the decisive step to evacuate all Ghanaians currently residing in Iran, the safety and well-being of our citizens remain our top priority,” Mr. Ablakwa stated.

He further revealed that Ghana’s embassy in Tehran had been closed with immediate effect to guarantee the safety of diplomatic staff.

The evacuation operation, which will be carried out through Iran’s land borders, covers all Ghanaian nationals in the country, including diplomats, students, professionals, and other residents.

Mr. Ablakwa reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to protecting every Ghanaian citizen, no matter where they are in the world.

He emphasised that the government is closely monitoring the rapidly evolving situation in Israel and will issue further guidance as necessary.

“In the meantime, we have ordered a significant scaling down of operations at our embassy in Tel Aviv, all Ghanaians currently in Israel are strongly advised to stay in close contact with our consular services for updates and support,” he announced.

The Minister concluded by renewing Ghana’s call for peace, urging both Israel and Iran to end hostilities and embrace diplomatic dialogue as the path forward.
