Member of Parliament for Gomoa East, Desmond De-Graft Paitoo, has responded to an inquiry from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) concerning the use of his “Dr.” title.
In a widely circulated letter, GTEC requested clarification on the institution that awarded his doctorate, whether it was earned or honorary, and the date it was conferred.
In an interview, Mr. De-Graft Paitoo indicated that he has directed his lawyers to provide a formal response to the Commission.
He expressed concerns over what he perceives as politically motivated actions by GTEC.
“I wonder why GTEC is targeting the NDC members, and who is influencing them to do that. If you want to invite me for questioning, write a letter to me personally. I have handed over the case to my lawyer, so I will speak once he responds,” he said.

Mr. Paitoo also clarified that he has not used the honorary title for official purposes.
“I didn’t earn anything on my own; I was honoured for the work that I have done. It is not an academically earned title. Even on my website, I haven’t put anything there,” he explained in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on Channel One.
The MP emphasised that GTEC’s public communication style raises concerns of partisan targeting, particularly towards members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“I wonder why GTEC is targeting the NDC members,” he reiterated, advocating for a more professional and discreet approach from the Commission.
