The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced the government’s plans to reduce the cost of the ordinary passport booklet.
This comes after the ministry revised its fees and charges on April 1, 2024, raising the cost of a standard application for 32 pages from GH¢100 to GH¢500.
But addressing Parliament on Thursday, March 13, 2025, the minister said the 32-page booklet would be reduced from GH¢500 to GH¢350 in an effort to make passports accessible to all citizens.
He added that the ministry will present the amendment of the fees soon.
“The government recognises concerns about the affordability of the new passport and is committed to ensuring that the cost remains reasonable while maintaining high security standards. In our effort to make passports more accessible to all Ghanaians, and per the instruction I have received from the president, we are pleased to announce that the cost of the ordinary passport booklet, the 32-page, will be reduced from GH¢500 to GH¢350.
“We will, in the coming days, be presenting the amendment of the fees and charges to ensure that this reduction is approved by the House,” he stated.
Mr Okudzeto Ablakwa also announced that the Foreign Affairs Ministry will introduce a door-to-door passport delivery service as part of the government’s 24-hour service initiative.
In February 2025, he revealed that the government intends to employ about 100 more staff members, aimed at establishing a 24-hour passport application system to cut down the processing time to just one week.
