Gov’t fines MultiChoice GH¢10,000 daily for withholding pricing data

The Minister for Communications has begun enforcing a statutory fine of GH¢10,000 per day against MultiChoice Ghana (operators of DStv) for failing to submit key pricing information requested under the Electronic Communications Act (ECA).

The penalty took effect on Friday, August 15, 2025.

Communications Minister Sam George announced the sanction during a meeting with DStv executives, stating that the company had not complied with repeated requests for detailed data.

The Ministry is seeking a full breakdown of bouquet pricing, tax components, and price comparisons with at least six other African countries.

According to the Minister, the data is critical to ongoing efforts aimed at reviewing and potentially reducing subscription fees for Ghanaian consumers.

The company had been granted an extension until Monday, August 11, 2025, to provide the data.

The Ministry has warned that if no price reduction agreement is reached by September 6, 2025, DSTV’s operating licence could be suspended.

Sam George stressed that the fine is a legal requirement under the ECA and separate from ongoing stakeholder negotiations.

“The law is clear, and we will enforce it. If necessary, we can freeze accounts to protect consumer interests,” he said, adding that once the data is received, it will undergo an objective review.

He assured that if evidence shows taxes are the main cause of high subscription rates, he will push for tax relief.

“If not, we expect DSTV to comply with our directive to make subscriptions more affordable,” he noted.
