Gov’t, labour to conclude salary talks by August end

Salary negotiations between the government and Organised Labour are set to wrap up by the end of August, according to the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).

The talks aim to reach a consensus on public sector wages for the coming year.

While labour groups are reportedly preparing to propose a salary increase of over 50 percent, the FWSC is calling for a balanced approach.

Dr. Smith Graham, Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, says discussions will be open and constructive, but expectations must be tempered.

“So, we will negotiate and come to a consensus. Labour has not officially proposed any figure to us yet. Whatever the proposal, we aim to conclude by the end of the month,” Dr. Graham said.

Earlier this year, the government approved a 10 percent salary increase for over 700,000 public sector workers under the Single Spine Salary Structure.

However, the increment was met with discontent, with many unions describing it as inadequate, especially given recent economic gains.

Minister for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, also weighed in, urging unions to consider economic indicators like inflation and currency depreciation during the talks.

He emphasised that any decision must reflect the real cost of living while being sustainable for the national budget.

Meanwhile, discussions on setting up an Independent Emoluments Commission have gained traction. Dr. Graham believes such a body would help address wage disparities and reduce agitation across the sector by providing fair and consistent salary reviews.

A new board has also been inaugurated for the FWSC to support smoother engagement between government and labour going forward.
