The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safe, dignified return and reintegration of Ghanaians being deported from the United States.

This follows a renewed wave of immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump, which has led to the arrest of over 3,500 undocumented immigrants by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) since his inauguration on January 20.

Deportation flights have resumed, with some involving U.S. military aircraft.

According to the Pew Research Center, the U.S., with a population of about 341 million, hosts an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants.

Ghana is among the countries affected, with 160 of its nationals currently facing imminent deportation.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra ahead of the ECOWAS at 50 launch, Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed that comprehensive plans are in place to receive and reintegrate the deportees.

He emphasised the government’s humanitarian approach, stating: “Out of respect for their dignity and human rights, we do not publicise details about the deportees. When they arrive, our teams are there to welcome them, provide support, and help reconnect them with their families.”

Mr Ablakwa also noted that while there have been no major updates since the last report from Ghana’s embassy in Washington, quiet collaboration with partners continues to ensure a smooth reintegration process.

“Our focus is to uphold the dignity of every Ghanaian, even in difficult circumstances,” he stressed.
