Gov’t plotting Torkornoo’s ouster – Tampuli

The Member of Parliament for Gushegu, Hassan Tampuli, has alleged that the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo is part of a broader, politically motivated strategy to reshape the judiciary from the top down.

In an interview on June 28, Mr. Tampuli accused elements within the current political leadership of deliberately pursuing a campaign promise to “purge” the judiciary.

“This is not a coincidence, it’s a premeditated move, during the election campaign, we heard loud and clear that this Chief Justice was considered unfit for office. The promise was made to overhaul the judiciary, and what we are seeing now is the execution of that plan, starting from the very top,” he stated.

His comments come amid growing national controversy over the Chief Justice’s suspension and the legal process being used to investigate allegations of misconduct against her.

Mr. Tampuli also raised concerns about the interpretation and application of Article 146(8) of the 1992 Constitution, which stipulates that proceedings related to the removal of high-ranking public officials, including the Chief Justice, must be conducted in camera that is, behind closed doors.

“In camera doesn’t mean you can’t bring your bodyguard, your spouse, or even your child into the room,” he argued. “It simply means the proceedings aren’t open to the general public. The law has been misunderstood and misapplied in this case.”

Mr. Tampuli’s remarks add to the intensifying public discourse over judicial independence, constitutional integrity, and the political pressures facing Ghana’s legal institutions.
