GRNMA strike: We are receiving more dead bodies – Mortuary workers lament
The Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) has expressed worry over the increasing number of deaths due to the ongoing nationwide strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).
Speaking in an interview, the General Secretary of MOWAG, Richard Kofi Jordan, described the situation as alarming, as he claimed more dead bodies are being brought to the various mortuaries due to the strike.
“Looking at the number of deaths compared to the past and now, the death toll has increased significantly, and it is not surprising because of the impact of the nurses’ absence.
“On average, where we are to record about 10 a day, we are recording about 20 to 25. This tells you that the absence of our nurses is becoming so severe,” he said in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report.
GRNMA’s strike follows the government’s delay of the implementation of nurses’ new conditions of service until 2026.
He warned that trying to meet these demands now could disrupt Ghana’s economic progress, especially given the current financial challenges the country is facing.
The Minister said, “These demands were not included in the 2025 budget, and meeting them now could throw the economy off-gear”.
He explained that while the government understands the concerns of nurses and midwives, it must also consider the broader economic situation to avoid financial instability.
