A five-member committee, set up by President John Dramani Mahama to investigate petitions filed against Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, will begin hearings today, Thursday, May 15, 2025.
The committee, chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, was formed after a prima facie case was determined in consultation with the Council of State, in line with Article 146(6) of Ghana’s Constitution.
Chief Justice Torkornoo was suspended by President John Dramani Mahama on April 22, following the establishment of the prima facie case against her.
While the details of the petitions are not yet public, the committee aims to ensure transparency and accountability throughout the hearings.

The hearings will take place three times a week, and the committee will submit its findings and recommendations to the President once the process is complete.
The public is closely watching the proceedings, as the outcome could have significant implications for Ghana’s legal system.
Meanwhile, an injunction filed before the petitions were formally referred to the Council of State and sought to bar the President from forwarding the complaint to the Chief Justice for a response was blocked by the Supreme Court, allowing the removal process to proceed.
