Personnel from the police service have been deployed to the University of Ghana campus following a clash between students of Commonwealth and Mensah Sarbah Halls.

The presence of the personnel, stationed at the main gate and halls, is to ensure that calm is restored on campus for academic work to proceed without interruptions.

It is unclear what caused the clash between the students that occurred on Friday night (5 August 2022), but a vehicle parked at the Mensah Sarbah Hall car park was set ablaze in the midst of the confusion.

A bust of John Mensah Sarbah, situated outside the Mensah Sarbah Hall, was also stolen.

The SRC union building sign board and newly renovated SRC notice board were also destroyed.

Some students have been picked up by the Legon Police in connection with the clash.

Meanwhile, management of the University of Ghana has condemned the clash.

A statement expressing its disappointment said efforts are in place to identify the perpetrators of the needless acts of violence that led to injuries and destruction of property.

It added that those found culpable for flouting the university’s rules and regulations will be appropriately sanctioned.

“Management assures the university community of its resolve to ensure that academic work and other activities proceed without hindrance, and of its commitment to safeguarding peace and stability on all campuses of the university,” the statement added.
