‘I need a hug’ – Singer Jessie J says she has breast cancer
Singer Jessie J has announced she’s been diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer.
The 37-year-old shared the news in a heartfelt Instagram video, revealing she plans to undergo surgery following her upcoming performance at Capital’s Summertime Ball at London’s Wembley Stadium later this month.
“I’ve been in and out of tests,” she said. “Cancer sucks in any form, but I’m holding on to the word ‘early.’” She added with humor, “It’s a very dramatic way to get a boob job.”
Jessie said she plans to take a break after the show: “I’m going to disappear for a bit to have my surgery. I’ll be back with bigger boobs and new music.”
She explained that going public helps her process the diagnosis and stand in solidarity with others facing similar struggles. “I’m sharing this because I haven’t talked about it enough. And I know from experience how powerful it is to connect with others.”
Jessie, who gave birth to her son in 2023, said the diagnosis has given her a new perspective. “I need to talk about it and process it—and I need a hug,” she said. “You’ve loved me through so much. I don’t want this to be any different.”
Fans and fellow celebrities flooded the comments with support. Gaby Roslin sent “enormous hugs,” while Rita Ora shared that her own mother had breast cancer and told Jessie, “You’ve got this.”
Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women in the UK. The NHS encourages regular self-checks to notice any unusual changes.
Jessie J has faced various health challenges in the past, including a childhood heart condition, a stroke as a teenager, temporary hearing loss due to Ménière’s disease, and more recently, ADHD and OCD.
She also revealed she recently turned down a major Broadway role in Cabaret, saying it wasn’t the right time. “My son was too young, and I just couldn’t do it,” she said.
