Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has revealed his deep spiritual convictions and future aspirations beyond politics.
In a candid interview with broadcaster Kafui Dey, the seasoned politician shared heartfelt reflections on his faith journey and personal struggles.
The lawmaker affirmed that his passion for preaching has always been with him. “If I stop being a politician today, one thing I’m certain of doing is to go into ministry. I have been dreaming about it. I see myself preaching the word of God,” he declared.
Afenyo-Markin opened up about his unwavering belief in God, declaring that his life experiences have fortified his faith, even in the face of crisis. “I have experienced my God, so when I see crises, it doesn’t shake me,” he stated.
He recounted how prayer and fasting have played a pivotal role throughout his life, dating back to his time at St. Augustine’s College.
His journey, however, was far from easy. He shared vivid memories of life after school—perching with friends and hustling to survive.
“My friends didn’t look down on me because I was from a poor home,” he revealed. Afenyo-Markin recalled humble beginnings, sharing how he lived with friends and even worked as a bus conductor—locally referred to as a “mate”—during his youth.
One particularly emotional memory was of his stepfather, who stood by him and offered spiritual support. “I remember when I was going to secondary school, he would hold my hand, pray for me, and weep,” he recounted.
Despite his current role in Ghanaian politics, Afenyo-Markin believes that his spiritual calling and political career are not mutually exclusive. “As a politician, nothing should stop me from sharing the word of God with people,” he added.
