Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, widely known as NAPO, has publicly stated that he has no intention of contesting for the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s flagbearer position ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 presidential election revealed this on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, during an interview.
Responding to a journalist’s question about his alleged presidential ambition, Dr. Opoku Prempeh clearly stated, “Me, personally? No, I’m not running in 2028.”
His comment comes amidst growing speculation in the media and within political circles that he was quietly preparing to launch a bid for the party’s leadership in the next presidential primaries.
However, NAPO was unequivocal in setting the record straight.
According to him, his current focus is not on personal political advancement but on the collective future of the New Patriotic Party.
He emphasised the importance of unity within the party, especially following the 2024 elections, and expressed his commitment to supporting the NPP’s campaign efforts and strategic development.
“My priority is to see a strong and united party,” he stated, adding that building internal cohesion and rallying support for the party’s future success is where his energy is being directed.
As one of the party’s most visible figures in recent years, NAPO’s clarification may help to reduce internal tensions and align focus on the NPP’s broader agenda going into the next election cycle.
