“Kidnapper” nabbed after desperate mother beats down GH¢5,000 ransom to GH¢50

A 19-year old suspected kidnapper is in the grips of the Eastern regional police for holding a nine-year-old to ransom.

The suspect, Ebenezer Okoh, a Senior High School dropout from Atweaman SHS, allegedly kidnapped his victim from Akim Esuboa and sent him to Akim Asene to lodge in a hotel.

The victim (name withheld) was abducted on his way from a public toilet while with his 10-year old brother.

The brother of the victim rushed home and narrated the incident to their mother, Mary Baah. Shortly after, the suspect called her and confirmed the news to her. He demanded GHC 5,000 as ransom to be sent through mobile money before the victim would be released.

The mother, Mary Baah, who could not afford the said amount pleaded with the suspect to accept GHC50, since that was the only amount she could afford.

The suspect accepted the offer but failed to fulfill his side of the bargain by releasing the victim.

This compelled the mother to lodge a complaint at the Akim Oda police station on Sunday, February 16, 2020.

Police officers sent the suspect some money through his mobile money (MoMo) and then laid ambush in the area where the suspect was hiding.

The suspect was then arrested shortly after he emerged from his hideout with the victim when he attempted to withdraw the money sent to him.

Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command, Sergeant Francis Gomado told Starr News, the suspect would soon be arraigned.
