Klagon building collapse injures mother and two children
A three-storey building collapsed in Klagon, located in the Tema West Municipality, leaving a mother and her two children injured on Wednesday morning.
The incident happened around 4:30 a.m., sending residents into panic as the structure came crashing down and trapped the victims under the rubble.
They were later rescued and rushed to the International Maritime Hospital (IMaH) in Tema, where they are receiving treatment.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Tema West, Ludwig Teye Totimeh, confirmed the incident and said the developer has been summoned before the Assembly to explain the circumstances leading to the collapse.
“We have directed the developer to appear before the Assembly immediately. A committee will also be set up to investigate the cause and ensure accountability,” Mr. Totimeh said.
Emergency response teams from NADMO, the Ghana National Fire Service, and the police are currently at the site, clearing debris and assessing damage to nearby buildings.
Residents described the experience as terrifying, saying they were jolted from sleep by a loud crash.
“We heard a heavy sound and saw dust everywhere. People started shouting for help,” one eyewitness recounted.
While investigations are ongoing, some locals blamed weak supervision and the use of substandard materials for the collapse.
They are calling on authorities to tighten monitoring and enforce building safety regulations.
