Kusaug NDC Executives decry military-linked violence in Bawku

The Kusaug constituency executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have voiced strong concerns over what they believe to be a government-backed attack on civilians and traditional symbols in Bawku.

The incident, which reportedly took place on July 13, involved armed individuals allegedly of Mamprusi origin, accompanied by military personnel.

Speaking during a press briefing on July 15, NDC representatives from the Binduri, Bawku Central, Pusiga, Tempane, and Zebilla constituencies described the attack as a painful reminder of the deepening crisis in the region.

They said the invaders not only injured residents but also destroyed the statue of the Bawku Naba, an act many in the Kusaug Traditional Area consider deeply offensive and symbolic of disregard for their culture.

“The people of Kusaug woke up to what can only be described as a state-sponsored assault, not only on civilians but on the very soul and authority of our traditional leadership,” the group stated.

While condemning all forms of violence, the NDC leaders criticised what they see as a pattern of disproportionate response by state forces, especially towards vulnerable groups. They alleged that women and children in school were targeted, leaving at least two injured.

They warned that continued silence from authorities could worsen already fragile relations in the area. The call was clear: justice must be served, and civilian lives protected.

The event adds to growing pressure on the government to act decisively and fairly in addressing the complex situation in Bawku, where peace has remained elusive.
