Let’s have a system to provide equitable allocation of royalties to musicians – Camidoh

Ghanaian afrobeats artiste, Camidoh has called for a holistic approach in the music industry to reward musicians for their works.

The ‘Sugarcane’ hitmaker said the current system in place to provide royalties to musicians is imbalance indicating that there is no equality and fairness.

“We all want our music to be loved properly so that royalties can be paid properly. Not that a phone call will be made to one person that he or she made this amount of money.

“Let us all see it in the system that this is the money you are making but not make a call to one person to come for three million Ghana cedis and another to come for two million Ghana cedis. Let’s not do it like that. We should have a system that works for artists,” he said in an interview.

Comparing Ghana’s music industry to that of South Africa, Camidoh asserted that South African musicians can decide not to tour other countries and still make enough money to invest in their craft.

According to him, Ghana’s music industry is not accorded the worth and value it deserves.

“I think that they do not really see the value that the music industry offers, if they see it, they will push for it. Because even in Nigeria, they understand that the music industry contributes very much to their GDP so they ease things for the artiste and people invest in music more,” he added.

The ‘Sugarcane’ crooner told hosts of the Afternoon Show, Anita Akuffo and Godwin Namboh on Wednesday that his heartbreak experience helped him to channel more time to relate with his family, especially his mother.

He said he is still dealing with the situation as he has been through therapy and received many advice from friends to deal with the bitter experience.
