Lightning strike kills four children in Sefwi Awaso

A tragic incident in Sefwi Awaso, located in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region, has left a community in mourning.

Four children have lost their lives, and one more is hospitalised after a thunderstorm struck the area on Monday evening.

The children, who were playing outside during the heavy rain, were caught off guard by a lightning bolt that surged through the air.

The shockwave sent ripples through the close-knit community, leaving families devastated.

“We only heard the loud crack and were told immediately that our children had been struck by lightning,” said one parent, her voice filled with sorrow.

The Assembly Member for the area, Kennedy Ayitey Wisdom, visited the grieving families and expressed heartfelt condolences.

In his message, he urged the community to take extra precautions during storms.

“Thunderstorms are dangerous, especially for children. Parents must keep their children indoors and away from open areas during these weather conditions,” he said.

The surviving child is receiving medical care, though the family’s grief remains palpable.

The Awaso community has since called for greater support from authorities and an education campaign about thunderstorm safety to help avoid similar incidents in the future.

This event has highlighted the need for more awareness of the dangers posed by severe weather in the region.
