Love spoken in pain: The last 7 words of Jesus

Source The Ghana Report

Good Friday marks one of the most solemn days in the Christian calendar—the day Jesus Christ was crucified on the cross at Calvary.

Observed during Holy Week as part of the Paschal Triduum, Good Friday commemorates the suffering and sacrificial death of Jesus, who gave his life for the salvation of mankind.

It’s also referred to as Holy Friday, Great Friday, or Black Friday in different Christian traditions.

According to the Bible, three days after his death, Jesus rose from the dead—an event celebrated with great joy on Easter Sunday, which marks the triumph of life over death, hope over despair.

But before his final breath, as he hung on the cross, Jesus spoke seven powerful and deeply emotional phrases—often called The Seven Last Words. Each one reveals his compassion, his humanity, and his divine purpose.

Here’s a look at these final sayings and what they mean in commemoration of the significant Christian celebration:

1. “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

Luke 23:34
Even in unimaginable pain, Jesus showed mercy. He pleaded with God to forgive those who were mocking, beating, and crucifying him. His first words from the cross were not of anger, but forgiveness.

2. “Truly I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

Luke 23:43
Spoken to the repentant thief crucified beside him, this promise showed Jesus’ grace and power to save—even in his final moments. It’s a message of hope for anyone who turns to him, no matter the hour.

3. “Woman, behold your son. Son, behold your mother.”

John 19:26-27
As he hung dying, Jesus ensured his mother Mary would be cared for. He entrusted her to the beloved disciple, John. In this act, he reminds us of the importance of love, family, and responsibility—even in suffering.

4. “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

Matthew 27:46 / Mark 15:34
These haunting words echo Psalm 22. Jesus expressed the depth of human agony and separation as he bore the weight of the world’s sin. It’s a cry that shows both his suffering and his fulfillment of prophecy.

5. “I thirst.”

John 19:28
This simple phrase reminds us of Jesus’ humanity. He felt pain. He was physically broken. Yet it also fulfilled scripture, symbolizing his willingness to fully embrace the suffering required to redeem mankind.

6. “It is finished.”

John 19:30
This declaration was not one of defeat, but of victory. Jesus had completed his mission—he had taken on sin, fulfilled prophecy, and opened the way to salvation. The debt had been paid in full.

7. “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”

Luke 23:46
With these final words, Jesus surrendered his life to God. It was a peaceful handing over, not of despair, but of trust and completion. His earthly mission was done.
