Mahama has broken 2020 peace pact – Gov’t condemns

The government has strongly condemned the NDC Flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, accusing him of inciting the public against the Electoral Commission (EC).

The Information Minister at a hurriedly arranged press conference to respond to Mr Mahama said the NDC leader had broken a peace pact he signed barely six days ago.

“It flies in the face of the peace pact that the candidate signed a few days ahead of the elections…nobody is a kid in this country. That is a dog whistle to get out there and celebrate.”

Brandishing a copy of the agreement before journalists, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah read portions in which candidates committed to following due process.

The NDC candidate, in a four-minute address, had sought to dispel social media reports that he had conceded the elections to his political rival, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

He proceeded to claim a lead in 10 out of the 16 regions and said his party had also secured what he called a working majority.

He later accused President Akufo-Addo of trying to use the military to interfere in the election.

He warned that any attempt to do so would be resisted by the Ghanaian people.

The party’s General Secretary, General Asiedu Nketia, would later chip in, calling on the party supporters to jubilate.

About half an hour later, the government’s Information Minister has expressed disappointment in Ghana’s former leader, describing some of his comments as irresponsible.

He debunked the claim that the NDC had won 140 seats explaining the media has access to the results declared at each of the 275 constituencies and should be able to verify John Mahama’s claim.

“The claim by Mahama is false… it is important that at this point in time, this claim be shot down.”

He said the government interprets the call to jubilate as a “dog whistle” to supporters to hit the streets.
