President John Mahama has announced a bold plan to build a new city outside the Greater Accra Region as a solution to the growing congestion in the capital.
Speaking during a ‘Thank You’ tour in Dodowa, President Mahama said the new city would serve as a secondary administrative and commercial hub, helping to ease pressure on Accra.
The proposed city is expected to host selected government ministries and agencies.
It will be supported by modern infrastructure, such as an expressway and a railway line connecting directly to Accra.
According to Mr President, this will help speed up government services while reducing the burden on the capital’s stretched resources.
“Accra is overstretched. The capital is facing mounting pressure from rapid urbanisation, traffic congestion, and inadequate infrastructure. It is time we think long-term and plan for a new city that can ease this burden,” he said.
Mahama explained that beyond easing congestion, the new development would attract investment and create space for new housing and businesses.
The plan is part of a larger vision to decentralise administrative functions and boost regional development.
The idea has already sparked public interest, with many looking forward to details on the proposed location, timeline, and funding.
If implemented, the project could become one of the most significant infrastructural undertakings in recent Ghanaian history.
