Mahama running mate choice, a threat to Ghana’s development – NPP

The NPP has branded the newly unveiled running mate to NDC flagbearer, Prof. Nana Opoku Agyeman as a threat to Ghana’s development.

Hours after she was named, the NPP Communications Director, Yaw Buaben Asamoa, catalogued her “failings” while she was Education Minister from 2013 to 2016.

The cancellation of allowances to teacher trainees which the NPP government has since restored was one of the key policy decisions, the NPP Communications Director criticised.

He said Professor Agyeman failed to ensure timely payments to schools and teachers and mentioned the capitation grant, payments for school feeding.

“Teachers were the hardest hit when Naana Opoku Agyemang was at the helm of affairs at the Education Ministry,” Yaw Buaben Asamoah said of the professor who was also the first female Vice-Chancellor for the University of Cape Coast.

The NPP Communications Director added that students on scholarships were always complaining due to arrears.

“Naana Opoku Agyemang also introduced the practice of teachers working for two years without being paid and being restricted to being paid only three months back pay, no matter how long they had worked. This inhumane treatment meted out to Ghanaian teachers at the time was the brainchild of Prof. Naana Opoku Agyemang, the then Minister for Education.”

“The cold hearted manner in which teachers were treated by Naana Opoku Agyemang cannot easily be forgotten.”

“We can only conclude that the choice of Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang by Mr John Dramani Mahama is a clear indication that he does not take the Ghanaian electorate seriously”.

“It is our view that after having looked long and wide the NDC still has a problem; they not able to find Mahamudu Bawumia’s clone”.

The governing party’s Communications Director’s comments sets the tone for the criticisms the professor would be expected to find answers to when she mounts the campaign platform.

One person who would be eager to fish out prof. Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s record is the Education Minister, Mathew Opoku Prempeh, who in 2017 called her an “embarrassment” and “a disgrace”.

The minister also called ‘Napo’ said Prof Opoku-Agyemang as Minister left the education sector burdened with the following debts per the Mahama administration’s own handing over notes:

Feeding Grants for Colleges of Education – GHS36 million

Feeding Grants for Special Schools – GHS4.7 million

SHS Subsidy – GHS24 million

Progressively Free Senior High School debt – GHS33 million

Capitation Grant, GHS8 million

GETFund debt – GHS3.7 billion

“She doesn’t understand education”, Dr Opoku Prempeh said in a radio interview in November 2017.

Nana Opoku Agyeman has said every political administration eventually leaves debts to its successor.

Napo had to later explain his criticism was not an attack on the academic after his comments triggered some pushback from the NDC who felt the language was in bad taste.

That kind of pushback could be expected as NPP figures lace up to discredit Mahama’s running mate.
