Mahama’s code of conduct ‘useless’ without action on Sammy Gyamfi – Nana B

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has lashed out at Sammy Gyamfi, accusing him of violating both Ghanaian law and the ethical standards set by President John Mahama’s newly launched Code of Conduct.

At a press conference on Tuesday, 13 May, Nana Boakye cited a viral video in which Mr Gyamfi is seen handing over bundles of US dollars to self-proclaimed evangelist Nana Agradaa.

He described the act as not only irresponsible but also a breach of key national laws and a slap in the face of Mahama’s own integrity pledge.

“What Sammy Gyamfi has done is a blatant act of indiscretion that undermines several laws of this country and ridicules the President’s Code of Conduct,” he stated.

He specifically pointed to violations of the Foreign Exchange Act (Act 723), which forbids dealing in foreign currency without a valid licence, and the Anti-Money Laundering Act.

According to him, stacking and distributing foreign currency in this manner is not only illegal but also detrimental to efforts to stabilise the Ghanaian Cedi.

“Ghana has only one legal tender, the Cedi. The Bank of Ghana has repeatedly cautioned against pricing, gifting, or receiving payments in foreign currency without authorisation that violators risk fines or imprisonment of up to 18 months,” he said.

Nana Boakye further argued that Mr Gyamfi’s conduct is a clear violation of Section 12 of President Mahama’s Code of Conduct, which demands personal behaviour that can withstand public scrutiny.

“This is the same Code President Mahama launched just a week ago, touting values like integrity, decency, and professionalism. How can anyone take it seriously if this clear breach goes unpunished?”

He urged the president to act swiftly under Section 6 of the Code, which outlines a zero-tolerance approach to ethical breaches by appointees.

“If President Mahama fails to act on this, he sends a message to Ghanaians and his own officials that the Code is just for show. It will be meaningless, completely useless.

“This is a test of leadership. If the President won’t enforce his own Code, then it’s nothing more than political theatre.”
