Malawi Ravaged: Aids-Related Deaths Reach 11,000 as Cyclone Kills 400

15,00 new HIV cases are being registered yearly in the African nation, with the death toll from the disease “still too huge,” authorities report.

The figures come as Cyclone Freddy – the deadliest in recent African history – ripped through towns and villages in the country’s south, leaving 700 wounded, hundreds dead, and many more displaced by ensuing floods and mudslides.

On top of those disasters, Malawi is also suffering its worst-ever cholera epidemic, with over 1,200 deaths and almost 40,000 cases recorded in the year to February 2023.
