Minority accuses government of data manipulation

The Minority in Parliament has accused the government of manipulating the data presented in the 2025 Budget and Economic Policy.

Addressing the media after the budget presentation on Tuesday, March 11, former Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam said the NDC government cooked the figures presented by the Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.

According to him, the NPP government left behind a strong economy, contrary to the broken economy the finance minister described in the budget.

“Trade balances are in surpluses. The current account balance is in surplus. This cannot be a broken economy. The fiscal data was what the Minister tried to use to misinform Ghanaians about the economy we handed over to them.

“Ladies and gentlemen, these are cooked figures. They have manipulated the data, and we know how they did it,” he said.

Dr. Amin Adam continued, stating that the minority will interrogate the data and reveal the actual figures to Ghanaians.

The minority also urged Ghanaians not to rejoice over the announcement of scrapped taxes, as most of them were non-existent.

For instance, he insisted that his government never implemented the betting tax and VAT on motor insurance.

“Ladies and gentlemen, betting tax that they said they had abolished, we never collected betting tax. We never implemented the betting tax, so to come and tell Ghanaians that you have abolished something that was never implemented is to deceive the people of Ghana,” he stated.

On Tuesday, March 11, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson presented the 2025 budget and stated that the government is expected to spend a total of GH¢269.1 billion in the fiscal year.

The Finance Minister explained that “total Expenditures (Commitment) for 2025 has been programmed at GH¢269.1 billion (20.7% of GDP) down from GH¢279.2 billion (26.0% of GDP) in 2024.”
