Minority questions exclusion of Greater Accra, Ashanti from major road projects

The Minority in Parliament has raised serious concerns about the exclusion of the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions from major road projects in the 2025 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review.

Speaking on behalf of the caucus, Ranking Member of the Roads and Transportation Committee, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, said the government’s plan lacks fairness and strategic direction.

According to him, it is alarming that regions accounting for over a third of Ghana’s population have been left out of the so-called Big Push Programme.

“These are not just political strongholds. They are the heartbeat of our economy,” he said. “Leaving them out sends a message that development is being guided by politics rather than national interest.”

The Minority says critical projects such as the Accra–Kumasi Road have been ignored, despite the daily struggles of commuters and traders. Damaged sections along this route continue to cause serious traffic delays, while proposed upgrades at Osino, Nsawam, Enyeresi, and Konongo have been left out entirely.

Other roads like the Atebubu–Kwame Danso stretch and the Anwia Nkwanta project in Kumasi also received no mention in the review, even though they had shown progress in previous budgets.

Residents and road users are expressing frustration, saying the neglect is affecting businesses and safety.

“The government must take a second look at its priorities. Development should serve all, not a few,” Nyarko urged.

The Minority is, therefore, calling for a more balanced approach that reflects real infrastructure needs across the country.
