Minority MPs storm EOCO over Wontumi’s detention
Members of the Minority Caucus in Parliament staged a dramatic walkout on Thursday in protest against the bail conditions imposed on the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Joined by party leaders and fellow NPP MPs, the group marched from Parliament House to the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), demanding Wontumi’s immediate release.
Chanting solidarity songs and locking arms, the group blocked the entrance to EOCO, insisting the continued detention of Chairman Wontumi, who has been in custody for nearly 48 hours, was unjust.
Wontumi was arrested by EOCO on Tuesday, May 27, after honouring an invitation from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for questioning.
He has since been held at EOCO’s Accra headquarters.
His lawyer, Andy Appiah Kubi, confirmed that Wontumi is being investigated for alleged financial loss to the state.
Though bail was granted at GH¢50 million with two sureties (both to be justified), he remained in custody after failing to meet the conditions.
