Mohammed Zakou granted GH₵100K bail over misinformation on Veep’s health
The Achimota Circuit Court has granted bail to Mohammed Zakou, an activist of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for allegedly disseminating false information regarding Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
Zakou was arrested on Saturday, April 12, following his Facebook post that read, “Rest Well, Her Excellency,” alongside crying emojis.
Authorities interpreted the post as a misleading claim about the Vice President’s demise, especially after government sources had acknowledged her recent health issues.
He was charged with the communication of false news. A prosecutor from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) stated that Zakou confessed to making the post but claimed it was meant as a good-hearted gesture towards the Vice President.
During his court appearance on Monday, April 14, Zakou’s legal team, headed by Gary Nimako Marfo, sought bail for him.
The prosecution did not object to this request but requested specific bail conditions to ensure that Zakou would be present for his trial.
The judge ultimately granted bail set at GH₵100,000, requiring two sureties. Additionally, Zakou must report to the investigator on a weekly basis.
The case has been postponed until May 12, 2025, for a case management conference.
