The Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) has commenced its nationwide strike today, November 28, 2024.
The strike is necessitated by stakeholders’ failure to resolve outstanding grievances raised by the group.
The association is demanding better service conditions, such as the provision of sufficient Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), the payment of outstanding salary arrears, and financial clearance for 500 additional mortuary workers.
It will be recalled that MOWAG, in a statement dated November 25, accused authorities of showing a lack of commitment to addressing their concerns, despite numerous calls.
Today’s strike comes after the association temporarily suspended an earlier industrial action on September 26, 2024, to allow for negotiations.
“Despite our efforts to reach a mutually acceptable resolution, the issues that led to the initial strike remain unresolved. We have been left with no choice but to take this decision to protect the interest of our members,” a statement released by MOWAG concerning the matter explained.
MOWAG has instructed mortuary workers in public and private facilities nationwide to halt operations indefinitely.
This action could disrupt mortuary services nationwide, potentially affecting funeral arrangements and bereaved families.
Meanwhile, the leadership of MOWAG says it remains open to dialogue, urging authorities to take immediate steps to resolve the impasse.
