Most musicians in Ghana don’t see their profession as a business – Rex Omar

Legendary Ghanaian highlife artiste, Rex Omar, has revealed that most musicians in Ghana don’t see their music careers as businesses they can earn much for their personal development.

According to him, research he conducted a while ago indicates that only 5% of musicians in Ghana understand that they are in a full-time business.

Those artists he believes earn much and accept the fact that they are gainfully employed in the Ghana Music Industry.

“Most of them are doing it with passion hoping that something will happen. Until today, most of the people pursuing music are not approaching it as business and as soon as you start to approach it as business, then you start to ask questions like if it is viable, especially doing music full time in Ghana.” He said this in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on Y107.9FM’s Weekend Rush.

He emphasized that because most musicians do not ask questions, they don’t know whether or not doing music is viable, and the requisite capital needed to invest in their crafts. He said, because most musicians lack this knowledge as purported by Rex Omar, they are unable to project prospects in their operations in the short-term, medium-term, and long-term.s

He also spoke on the fact that most musicians are being influenced by their fame and don’t make effort to work hard to save towards the future.

He advised musicians who are well-known in Ghana and other countries to ensure that they continue to follow their passion, continue to make history, enjoy the good times, and save for the future when their names won’t be heard as new artists might be reigning at that moment.

“Unfortunately, this very society will start to lambast you that you didn’t live a profitable and fulfilling life. They will say you spent all you had on women. When the whole situation is that Ghana is a small market and we have very few independent record labels that have the requisite capital and knowledge to even break even for artistes,” he said.

“If you’re not careful, some people who are already in the music industry thinking and hoping they will make it will also pounce on you because of the passion they have but, if you put emotions aside and look at it with the business approach, you’ll realize that very few musicians are making money out of music,” he concluded.
