Mountain of foodstuffs perish in Yeji as pontoon breaks down
Perishable goods loaded into more than 100 cargo cars are rotting away as the only pontoon that ferries people and goods across the Volta Region to the Savanna Region has broken down.
Scores of commuters are also stranded in Yeji in the Bono East Region as they cannot cross to other areas, such as Mankango in the Savanna region via the Volta Lake.
It’s been nearly a week since the pontoon broke down, and authorities have yet to provide a solution.
Reports say engineers have not been able to fix the broken-down ferry, which became faulty after a storm following a down-pour while berthing on Sunday, March 19, 2023.
Commuters and drivers prefer using the pontoon to cross the river en route to Salaga, Chereponi, Tamale, Bimbimbilla, Tamale and neighbouring West African countries.
The pontoon is preferred by many because it offers a shorter route to the northern parts of the country.
