Mpox cases rise to 133 nationwide

Ghana has reported 14 additional cases of Mpox, raising the total number of confirmed infections across the country to 133, according to the latest update from the Ghana Health Service (GHS).

Fortunately, there have been no new hospital admissions or fatalities, with all patients currently being treated as outpatients.

These latest figures mark a noticeable uptick from the previous update on June 20, which recorded 10 new cases and brought the total to 119.

Health authorities maintain that the situation is manageable, with no serious complications or deaths reported thus far.

Mpox, a viral disease primarily spread through close physical contact with infected individuals, presents common symptoms including fever, skin rash, swollen lymph nodes, and headaches.

In light of the rising cases, the GHS has urged the public to take necessary precautions and report any early symptoms to help mitigate further transmission.

To improve the national response, the World Health Organisation (WHO) provided crucial assistance on June 24, donating test kits and laboratory reagents to the National Public Health Reference Laboratory in Accra.

This shipment contains supplies sufficient to screen 3,400 suspected cases and test 625 confirmed samples for different virus subtypes.

Dr. Caroline Reindorf Amissah, Acting Deputy Director-General of the GHS, highlighted the timely nature of this support, emphasising the Service’s commitment to enhancing community surveillance and contact tracing efforts.

The GHS has reiterated the importance of avoiding close contact with individuals exhibiting symptoms and the necessity of frequent handwashing with soap and water.

They also urge the public to obtain information from official sources and refrain from spreading misinformation, particularly on social media.

While most individuals infected with Mpox have recovered without needing hospitalisation, health experts caution that children, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems may be at a higher risk for complications.

With the total number of infections now at 133, health authorities are calling on the public to stay vigilant and comply with safety measures designed to curb the spread of the disease.
