Member of Parliament for Mpraeso, Davis Ansah Opoku, is urging Ghana’s telecommunications sector to adopt a fixed monthly data plan that offers unlimited internet access to all citizens.

He believes this shift is crucial for achieving digital inclusion and shielding consumers from unpredictable price hikes.

Speaking on an interview, Mr Opoku praised recent efforts by the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, who pushed MultiChoice Ghana to slash DStv subscription fees by 30%.

The minister also engaged telecom providers to revise data plans in response to the Ghanaian Cedi’s 30% appreciation over the past five months.

While acknowledging these interventions, Mr Opoku argued that more lasting solutions are needed.

“I am looking forward to a fixed rate where Ghanaians enjoy unlimited services every month. It is a good step and we commend him for that,” he said.

The MP’s proposal comes at a time when many Ghanaians are spending a significant portion of their income on capped data packages.

With over 40 million mobile subscriptions nationwide, affordable and reliable internet access is increasingly seen as a basic necessity for education, business, and social connection.

Implementing fixed-rate unlimited data plans would require collaboration between the government, the National Communications Authority, and major telecom providers like MTN Ghana, Vodafone Ghana, and AirtelTigo.

If successful, the initiative could align Ghana’s digital infrastructure with global standards and empower millions of users.
