NAPO confirms NIB questioned him over Education Ministry role
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party’s 2024 Vice Presidential candidate, has confirmed that he is being questioned by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in connection with his time as Ghana’s Minister of Education.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh, widely known as NAPO, disclosed that he has been invited by the NIB twice to assist with ongoing investigations related to his tenure from 2017 to 2021.
“People don’t know that I’ve been invited by the NIB to assist in investigations into some issues during my time at the Ministry of Education. I couldn’t have declined that invitation,” he said.
He admitted that recalling some details from over four years ago has been difficult, pointing out that administrative records are maintained by technocrats who worked closely with him.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh used the moment to remind current public officeholders to serve with accountability, as the tables can turn quickly in politics.
“Today, you can be in power; the next day, you could be in opposition. Politicians in power should always be mindful of what they do with the authority entrusted to them,” he added.
His remarks come amid increased scrutiny of former government officials. Others, including Professor Ameyaw Ekumfi and Kwaku Ohene Gyan, have also reportedly been questioned by the NIB.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh resigned as Minister of Energy in July 2024 to focus on the upcoming election campaign after being selected as Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate.
He noted that he has cooperated fully with investigators and is willing to continue doing so.
The NIB has not issued an official comment on the ongoing investigations.
