Government has begun a nationwide exercise of ensuring that every building in the country is tagged with a digital address system.

The move comes on the back of efforts to digitise the economy and to ensure that every household can be uniquely identified.

Chief Executive Officer of the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO), Dr. Ibrahim Anyars, while announcing the move by government explained that the entire workforce for the project has received adequate training to ensure that the exercise is carried out smoothly.

He noted “some 12,750 NABCO workforce at the regional and district levels are expected to generate digital addresses of every home they visit through the use of digital mobile devices given them”.

He added that the address will then be aggregated at the various Municipal, Metropolitan District Assembly (MMDA) for processing and printing.

The second phase of the project will see the NABCO workforce partnering the MMDAs to actually fix the printed addresses on the properties so identified.

He said NABCO will be partnering with Regional Ministers, Municipal Metropolitan District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (LUPSA), Physical Planning Officers and Technical Officers to ensure the team is able to meet its target.

The Digital Address system provides an effective means of addressing every location and property to facilitate the implementation of key government policies and business transactions.

Earlier this year, President Akufo-Addo launched the National Digital and Property Addressing System, aptly-dubbed ‘ghanapostGPS,’ a modern approach to allocating addresses within a defined space with the aid of the latest geocoding technology.

This project, was one of the 2016 campaign promises made by the President.

“With this new system, every property in Ghana will have an address and can be accounted for, including the location of the blue kiosk, the ‘waakye’ seller or the ‘koko’ seller. The Property Addressing System also means that the ‘koko’ seller can now open a bank account, as he or she will be able to meet the basic requirement to access loan facilities from a bank. The ‘koko’ seller, like many other small businesses, can also grow his or her business,” the President said during the launch in Accra.
