After two straight seasons of being inactive, John Wall has announced his retirement from competing in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and playing professional basketball.
The former Washington Wizards point guard announced his retirement via a statement on his Instagram page where he reflected on his career and thanked fans and his family for supporting him through his basketball journey.
The number one overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft ends his 11 year career as a five time All Star while making it to the 2017 All NBA Third Team and 2015 NBA All-Defensive Second Team. He formed a dynamic duo with shooting guard Bradley Beal and competed in the playoffs four times.
He averaged 18.7 points, 8.9 assists and 1.6 steals as a member of the Wizards, Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Clippers. Due to a heel injury and a ruptured Achilles tendon injury, Wall’s effectiveness and availability ruled him out for a full year.
He was traded to the Rockets for Russell Westbrook but barely played in his one year stay in Houston as the Rockets focused on rebuilding its team. He spent the 2022-2023 season with the Clippers.
“To my family, my mom especially, thank you for all your sacrifice. I hope I made you proud. To my teammates, trainers, and coaches, thank you for believing in me. And to the fans, you made me feel unstoppable” Wall wrote on his Instagram page.
After spending nine years with the Wizards, Washington congratulated Wall for his achievements stating on their X (formerly Twitter) page stating,
“One of our franchise all-time greats. The definition of an era. A lasting legacy. A forever Wizard.”
