NIB arrests ECG IT personnel over recent meter glitch

Some personnel of the IT department of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have been picked up by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in connection with the meter glitch that hit the power distributor a few months ago.

Some customers in parts of the Volta Region, Takoradi, Tema, Cape Coast, Kasoa, Winneba, Swedru, Koforidua, Nkawkaw and Tafo were unable to buy electricity credit due to metering system downtime in October last year.

Asaase Radio sources at ECG confirmed the arrest after the activities of the arrested staff were discovered.

Investigation ongoing

Speaking to the sit-in host of the Asaase Breakfast Show Philip Asiawo on Wednesday (22 March), the managing director of ECG, Samuel Mahama, also confirmed the arrest but failed to give further details.

“Investigations are still ongoing,” Mahama said. “Some of them were picked up, others were asked to go, so that conversation is for the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to deal with.”

“And as for our problems of information technology, we have done our best to come a long way. I will say most of them have been fixed.

“We are doing our best to intensify our security, both cyber and physical so that we can serve the people of Ghana better and make sure we are reliable in giving out the service we promised,” the ECG MD added.
