No Dining For Armed Forces, Yaa Asantewaa SHS Students As Feeding Grant Delays

Source The Ghana Report

Students in some Senior High Schools (SHSs) have been denied their daily meals over the delay in payment of feeding grants by the government.

School resumed for students nationwide on Tuesday, January 10, 2023, and information gathered suggests that the schools are not providing meals.

The government according to the Ministry of Education is yet to release feeding grants to some schools.

Due to this pathetic situation, some schools have not yet started serving food in their dining halls.

One of the teachers from the aforementioned schools in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on GHOne revealed that “Students haven’t been served at dining since we resumed, we are told the government is now distributing food items to the various Senior High Schools”.

“Parents should send more money to their wards for feeding,” he added.

A student who reported on Monday also said: “I reported on Monday 9th January 2023 and to date we haven’t been served any food at the dining hall yet, I have used all my money to buy food”.

The student added that “food vendors at the school canteen haven’t resumed yet, thereby resorting to eateries outside the school boundaries, mostly at Bantama and Adum in the evening”.

Another first-year student also complained that situations are hard in the school currently because most of them were sacked on arrival to go and purchase detergents, toilet tissue, and bulbs without prior notice.

A former MCE for Obuasi also disclosed to the aforementioned media that her daughter at Yaa Asantewaa Senior High has requested banku from home because the school has been unable to feed them since she reported to the school.

Most schools that resorted to borrowing to feed the students have pledged not to fall on other institutions for money and food anymore until the government release a feeding grant to the schools.

Meanwhile, in November 2022, Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta laid before Parliament in the 2023 Budget indicating an increment of feeding grants for schools under the School Feeding Programme..
